Beginning in 1985, Dr. McDonald was in great demand as a visiting professor, lecturing at seventeen prestigious medical schools and facilities. A number of factors contributed to this recognition. McDonald served as President of the South-Eastern Organ Procurement Foundation in 1983, President of the Surgical Association of Louisiana in 1983, President of the United Network for Organ Sharing in 1985 and 1986, President of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons in 1987, President of the Halsted Society in 1991, President of the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency in 1992, President of the Southern Surgical Association in 1994, and finally, was a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons from 1999-2004.
In addition to his leadership roles in surgical associations and organ sharing networks, McDonald and his team of researchers were making significant contributions to the medical literature. Their studies in renal and liver transplantation, soluble human lymphocyte antigens (HLA), immunosuppressive protocols, and immunologic tolerance augmented the knowledge base in transplantation and organ rejection.
